Install glass panels to basement for better light

Glass panels can be used anywhere and everywhere in the house. Moreover, with variety available in commercial glass panels, you get large number of options to choose from. The glass panels make the property look stunning. Now-a-days, even the office partition wall systems are made up of glass panels. Another interesting place in your house where you can put up the glass panels is the basement.

Getting a glass block window for your basement is easy. You will find that there are preassembled glass panels that are already mortared together and can be secured to your basement window without a fuss. Although it does sound very easy it is not so, since these glass panels could be heavy to handle. Also filling the glass panels on the sides, so that they fit the basement window frame could take time. However, the process is fairly simple and you can in fact get a panel up in no time at all. All you need to do is make sure, there is someone to help you hold up the glass panel while you fix it to your basement window frame. It will not take you more than a few hours, to get the glass block installed in your basement window area.

Before you go ahead with the process of installing the new glass block on your basement window there are a few steps that you need to take care of.

It is always good to measure the size of your basement window, where you will be installing the glass block. This will ensure that you get the right dimensions and it saves you the trouble of cutting the glass block at home. You can easily get a custom made block, for your basement from any of the fabricators online or though a brick and mortar store.

Your next step would be to remove the old window. This could be a tough part especially, if you haven't changed your basement windows in a while. You will have to skillfully wreck the bar, cut the wood off the sill and at the same time make sure that you don't hurt the surrounding concrete. Not only will it ruin the saw blade but it will leaving a gaping hole, and you will first have to fix the concrete before carrying on with installing the glass panel for your basement window.

The next step is to set up the panel in your basement window. You will need to make sure that you have a temporary wooden block handy, as this will help in keeping the panel from tipping in. If the basement window has a sill plate, then all you need to do is screw in the panel and your job is done.

The last step is to seal the panel and this can be achieved by mortaring the panel. This will pack all the edges, as well as give it a smooth finish. You will have to check from the outside, as well as the inside of the basement window to see if there are no voids left around. If there are, pack it up with some more cement and the job will be done.
